Rules of Poker

Poker is a game of chance, but it also has a great deal of strategy and psychology. Many players learn through detailed self-examination of their own results, and others develop a strategy by discussing their hands with other people. Either way, the best poker players always tweak their play to keep it sharp and improve their odds of winning.

RULES OF PLAY

Each player must “ante” something (amount varies by game) to get dealt cards. After that, bets are placed into the pot in the middle – the highest hand wins. When betting gets around to you, say “call” or “I call” if you want to bet the same amount as the last person (or more, depending on how aggressive you play).

If your opponent raises you and you don’t have a strong hand, then fold – it’s a waste of money. If your opponent is known for being loose or tight, then you might be able to pin them on a weaker hand and take advantage of the better odds you have to win the pot.

Occasionally, someone might forget that it’s their turn to act and you’ll need to remind them. This is fine, but do it quietly so as not to disrupt the flow of the hand and the rest of the table. It’s also a good time to make change for the rake if you have to – most players will wait until they are in the hand to ask for it which slows hands down over the long run.
